The Last Watch Before Port

There’s a special atmosphere aboard KRITI RUBY on the last night before arrival. The anticipation is palpable, but quiet—less like a celebration, more like a collective inward breath before a long-awaited exhale.

On this particular evening, I was assigned to the midnight watch. The horizon ahead was faintly aglow, a distant shimmer of coastal lights barely visible against the darkness. The air smelled different too: a mix of salt and faint earthiness carried from land.

The bridge felt heavier somehow, filled with the unspoken thoughts of the crew. Each of us was thinking of shore, of what waited—or didn’t wait—for us at the end of this voyage.

The captain stood near the window, arms folded, gaze fixed on the distant glow. His expression was unreadable, a mix of focus and fatigue. We exchanged few words; there was no need.

Below deck, the engine room crew prepared for arrival maneuvers, checking systems meticulously even as their thoughts surely drifted to shore leave, family, familiar streets.

The last watch before port is a time for reflection. Looking back at the miles sailed, the storms endured, the routine that became life itself. It’s also a time of transition—from the floating world we know so well to the uncertainties of land.

As the hours passed, I felt a subtle sadness too. The rhythm of the sea, the pulse of KRITI RUBY beneath my feet, the camaraderie forged in confined spaces—these things would soon pause, replaced by another rhythm ashore.

When dawn broke, the coastline was clear and close. Buoys and channel markers appeared, and our approach began in earnest. The final log entries were made with precision; orders were crisp, responses immediate.

And as the sun rose behind us, casting a golden light across the still water, I realized that this last watch was not an ending but part of a cycle. Soon, KRITI RUBY would sail again, and so would we.

For now, we savored this moment—the quiet passage from one world to another, the bittersweet beauty of return.

And KRITI RUBY, steadfast as ever, glided smoothly toward port, carrying us all—our stories, our silences, and our longing for both sea and shore.
